A microscope with a gigantic multitouch display

The multitouch microscope is an innovation developed by researchers at the Institute for Molecular Medicine Finland (FIMM) in collaboration with MultiTouch, a Finnish company.

The innovation is based on two technologies created in Finland: virtual microscopy and a giant-size multitouch display. Traditional microscopes can only be used to examine a small part of a sample, says Johan Lundin. A virtual microscope can be used to create a comprehensive montage of the sample. The montage can consist of as many as 50,000 images. The result is an entirely new way of performing microscopy: by touching a table- or wall-sized screen the user can navigate and zoom within a microscope sample in the same way as in a conventional microscope.

How to get $4,274,700,000 worth of art on your TV using Google Chromecast

Subject: Story Idea: How to get $4,274,700,000 worth of art on your TV using Google Chromecast (Video Technology Magazine)
To: John Sokol

John --

I'm writing to suggest a timely tech story for Video Technology Magazine:  How anyone can put $4.2 billion dollars worth of art in their TV using Google Chromecast.

High-end art used to be just for the rich and famous -- something to appreciate at The Louvre or purchased at Sotheby's.

But now Google Chromecast is making billions of dollars worth of art available to everyone;  Much of the world's greatest art has just become available for free so that anyone, anywhere, can stream it direct to their TV, using Artkick [www.artkick.com] -- a free app that turns home TV's into a digital frame for world-class art.

Now a billionaire's collection of visual masterpieces are available for display in your home today, including:

* $1,000,000,000:  'Mona Lisa' by Leonardo da Vinci
* $269,400,000:  'The Card Players' by Paul Cezanne
* $200,000,000:  'The Concert' by Johannes Vermeer
* $200,000,000:  'The Wedding Dance' by Pieter Bruegel the Elder
* $155,800,000:  'Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I' by Gustav Klimt
* $150,000,000:  'Self-Portrait (with straw hat)' by Vincent van Gogh
* $141,500,000:  'Bal du Moulin de la Galette' by Pierre-Auguste Renoir
* $122,200,000:  'The Scream' by Edvard Munch
* $109,400,000:  'Irises' by Vincent van Gogh
* $99,700,000:  'Massacre of the Innocents' by Peter Paul Rubens
* $90,000,000:  'The Visitation' by Rembrandt
* $87,500,000:  'Le Mont Sainte-Victoire vu des Lauves' by Paul Cezanne
* $86,200,000:  'Water Lily Pond' by Claude Monet
* $85,000,000:  'Still Life, Drapery, Pitcher and Fruit Bowl' by Paul Cezanne

For the complete list of 32 paintings worth $4.2 billion, just let me know and I can email it over right away.  To display this grand collection of art on any TV, simply download the Artkick app [www.artkick.com] and choose the "Most Valuable Paintings" view list.

I'm also happy to arrange an interview on this Chromecast topic with Artkick CEO Sheldon Laube (the former Chief Innovation Officer of PriceWaterhouseCoopers).  He is available for in-person (San Francisco or New York), phone, or Skype interviews from March 10 - 14.

Thanks,
Ann

Artkick [www.artkick.com], now available for Google Chromecast, transforms millions of internet connected TVs into large interactive picture frames you control with your smartphone or tablet. Van Gogh’s Starry Night, NASA’s Hubble images from deep space, Ansel Adams landscapes, and contemporary photography are all easily and quickly viewable. Artkick is led by tech luminaries such as Sheldon Laube, former Chief Innovation Officer of PriceWaterhouseCoopers, and Abe Ostrovsky, the former CEO and then Chairman of Accelio Corporation (acquired by Adobe in 2002).

Texas Instruments shrinks its HD DLP Pico projector chip down to 0.3-inches

We wouldn't say that smartphone projectors have exactly caught fire, Samsung's Galaxy Beam notwithstanding. Part of the problem is the extra bulk required by pico projector components, which is where Texas Instruments comes in with its new HD "Tilt and Roll" DLP Pico chipset. They've now got the size down to about 0.3-inches, or about the size of a pencil-tip as shown above. That should let makers of tablets, smartphones and wearables add 120 Hz projector powers to their devices. It's also the chip used in Avegant's Glyph VR headset -- so it might be beaming a movie directly to your retinas at some point in the future.

IDS presents IP camera with onboard video server

IDS presents a standalone camera system with integrated video server for applications within process monitoring, logistics and ITS.

The VSE IP camera offers a browser-based, intuitive user interface for simple integration and unseen ease of operation.

to top
The VSE Control Center

The VSE is immediately ready for use without complex implementation or programming - thanks to the browser-based VSE Control Center which offers simple camera configuration and interactive operation. In addition, the camera works with every web browser; hence it is totally platform independent!

Wherever the camera may be used: It can be accessed anytime and anywhere as no software installation is required.

A variety of display options guarantee a full overview: from full-screen to snapshots, from instant recordings to various streaming modes. Moreover, MJPEG and H.264 data compression with MJPEG and H.264 streaming results in a significantly lower data volume and thus less memory requirements. Pictures and videos can be accessed at any time as all data is stored directly in the camera. The internal 32 GB memory also ensures that no data is lost. Consequently, events are fully traceable and searching for a particular event or incident is extremely straightforward. The camera also allows to monitor several processes simultaneously with its unique "Remote View" feature: Live videos from multiple VSE cameras are displayed in one single browser window.

Accessing stored data – easier than ever

Get immediate, instant access to images and videos with a variety of viewing modes: via timeline, event bar or playlist.

Great for process monitoring or ITS applications: events are fully traceable, as causes can easily be identified using pre-alarm recordings.

In addition, recording images is very easy too: choose to trigger either via a graphical timeline, software or the integrated, interactive motion detection.

Motion detection – a great alternative to light barriers

The VSE helps to save costs and valuable time as extra programming effort is unnecessary!

Instead of using conventional light barriers, benefit from the VSE's integrated and interactively controllable motion detection which acts as a trigger. Thus this feature is particularly helpful for applications within logistics, eg. for parcel or baggage inspection.

To protect the privacy of employees, unwanted regions can be hidden using a mask mode.

Full control – anytime and anywhere!

Monitor all processes even from afar with the free of charge "IDS Remote View" apps available for Android and iOS tablets and smartphones.

Both apps offer an intuitive, graphical user interface.

CMOS technology for best possible image quality

Enjoy highest detail accuracy and sensitivity with e2v's 1.3 MP and Aptina's 5 MP CMOS sensors.

e2v's 1.3 MP sensor guarantees distortion-free images of moving objects thanks to its global shutter mode making it the perfect choice for application within ITS. Ideal images in all lighting and ambient conditions are guaranteed by the camera's day/night function.

For easy installation the camera and maximum freedom, power can be supplied via PoE (power over Ethernet). This feature allows to power supply and data transfer via one single cable.
The camera's ultra-compact design makes integration even easier.

Streaming and Cord-Cutting Take a Toll On the Pay-TV Industry

Streaming and Cord-Cutting Take a Toll On the Pay-TV Industry

from the I-want-to-watch-it-now dept.
First time accepted submitter ClarkSchultz writesHarris Interactive confirms that consumers streaming video content prefer the practice of binge viewing. The news isn't a big shocker to streaming concerns such as Netflix, Amazon, and Redbox Instant which have been mining viewer habits data, but it has an important read-through for broadcasters like CBS, NBC, Fox, and ABC. Though ad rates could fall if more viewers wait until series are available for streaming, the payoffs for quality content are proving lush: 1) CBS says it paid $700K per episode for streaming rights to Under the Dome 2) AMC Networks has pointed to Netflix as contributing to the success of Breaking Bad after initial ratings were soft. If streaming wins, who loses? Front and center is the Pay-TV industry. A wave of merger rumors (Charter/Cox/Time Warner Cable/Comcast/Dish Network) indicates the industry knows the trend of subscriber losses to the cord-cutting phenomenon will continue. An online TV initiative from a tech heavyweight like Sony, Apple, Google, or Intel could also disrupt the industry enough to put cable and satellite companies into an even bigger tailspin.

FBI can secretly turn on laptop cameras without the indicator light

Scary. Insane. Ridiculous. Invasive. Wrong. The Washington Post reports that the FBI has had the ability to secretly activate a computer's camera "without triggering the light that lets users know it is recording" for years now. What in the hell is going on? What kind of world do we live in?

Fwd: Press Release: Spiral Groove SG 1.1 Turntable Wins Stereophile Award, Will Be Exhibited at CES 2014

---------- Forwarded message ----------
Date: Tuesday, December 3, 2013
Subject: Press Release: Spiral Groove SG 1.1 Turntable Wins Stereophile Award, Will Be Exhibited at CES 2014

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Spiral Groove SG1.1 Turntable Wins Stereophile Analog Components of 2013 Award, Will Be Showcased at CES 2014

BERKELEY, CALIFORNIA, December 3, 2013 - At CES 2014 Spiral Groove will be exhibiting its ultrahigh-end SG1.1 turntable, which has received a 2013 Products of the Year award from Stereophile magazine. Named one of two Analog Components of 2013 by the publication, the SG1.1 turntable and companion Centroid tonearm are designed to deliver ultimate-quality record playback.

The SG1.1 will be on exhibit at the Immedia suites at The Venetian Las Vegas, Venetian Tower Suites 30-125 and 30-127 (January 7 - 10, 2014) as part of a complete music system that also features QUALIA & COMPANY components and the Canalis Amerigo 2.0 loudspeaker.

The SG1.1 is engineered using Spiral Groove's Balanced Force Design approach, aimed at achieving the most elegant equilibrium of materials, performance, function, manufacturability and beauty.

The body of the SG1.1 utilizes two separate constrained layer platforms, separated by elastomers that mechanically decouple the two assemblies and form a dense, rigid and well-damped, non-resonant platform to which the working parts of the turntable can be precisely mounted and isolated from one another. The entire turntable weighs 70 lbs.

The SG1.1 offers electronically selectable 33-1/3 and 45 rpm speed control. The low voltage/high-torque AC synchronous motor is decoupled from the rest of the turntable for exceptionally quiet record playback. The inverted sapphire disc/hardened steel bearing and platter assembly is mounted in a manner that allows the platter to rotate freely without flexure or noise, and the platter is driven at the fulcrum of the bearing for wobble-free revolution. The platter utilizes an oversize stainless steel drive ring to provide increased inertia and speed stability.

The Centroid tonearm is built from materials selected for low mass, high strength and the ability to transfer mechanical energy away from the cartridge. The Centroid was designed using computer modeling techniques that simulate the forces exerted on the arm as the cartridge tracks the record, enabling the tonearm's design to precisely account for and compensate for the mechanical effects of arm/cartridge/record interactions.

The tonearm mounting board of the SG1.1 is fitted with a stainless steel bayonet mounting system that is easily removed from the turntable with the push of a button, enabling multiple arm and cartridge combinations to be pre-set up and readily swapped and installed, with perfect alignment every time.

The Spiral Groove SG1.1 turntable is currently available at a suggested retail price of $36,000 with Centroid arm and $30,000 without arm. Spiral Groove is distributed in the U.S. by Immedia, along with Canalis loudspeakers, Strange Attractors vibration control accessories and QUALIA & COMPANY audio components.

About Spiral Groove
