Fwd: Comcast's $2.2 Trillion Nightmare
Isnt going to happen. Cable is a broadcast medium. At the physical layer, its much more efficient the trying to unicast live tv.
Also comcast with tivo is the only system that can do cable tv and internet video in one box.
So far apple and google have only shown how clueless they are about video. Its not a technical issue. I showed D1 video over the internet to the studios in 1996 to 1999. My conclusion they have no hurry, or motivation to change. Now that there partners control the last mile, piracy is also not a real threat like it was for the music industry. Its so tightly bound with legal contracts that change is nearly impossible except for the disney, nbc and other players at that scale.
They will never let tv live up to its true potential.

What I've learned from 35 years of wearing computerised eyewear
Steve Mann on his 35-year history building and wearing computerised eyewear. "Was it blind luck (pardon the expression) that I was wearing this vision-enhancing system at the time of the accident? Not at all: I have been designing, building, and wearing some form of this gear for more than 35 years." Glass has the potential to have a huge impact on the world - and just like with the advent of the mobile phone, people are afraid, cynical, and unable to see the possibly huge benefits of systems like this.
