Microsoft Xbox to carry live TV from Sky TV, Foxtel and Canal+

Microsoft announced a new streaming TV implementation for the Xbox 360. The Kinect and Bing-powered voice search that can pull in content from online sources like Hulu, Netflix and Xbox Live Marketplace, will also work with live TV from IPTV partners. So far that list only includes Sky in the UK, Foxtel in Australia and Canal+ in France, but users there will be able to search across all the services and view them directly through the console itself. There's no word on any US-based partners but if we had to guess AT&T's U-verse will probably be first in line again. One thing you will be able to watch in the US -- PPV UFC fights, streamed directly to the Xbox 360.

In the  official press release Microsoft mentions its "commitment to expand access to live television programming on Xbox 360 to more providers in the United States and around the world during the upcoming year". While
AT&T's U-verse's Mediaroom underpinnings certainly put it in the lead, we can see others like FiOS or Comcast potentially swooping in as well. Finally, would it be too much to ask for some of this universal search magic to extend to the Media Center extender software as well?

Press Release:

Bing on Xbox: You are The Controller
The Bing Team 6/6/2011

The future living room does more than give you great entertainment; it helps you find what you're looking for and helps you decide what to enjoy. It gives you simplicity, discovery and personal choice. Today at E3, we are excited to preview a new way for people to find movies, games, music and other entertainment: voice search with Bing on Xbox.

Today's announcement opens up your living room entertainment in the same way search engines opened up the Web by indexing it and making it discoverable. When you think about the state of your entertainment media, the challenge of finding what you want is similar. You have games, movies, music, TV shows and other content on your console, through services like Netflix, Hulu, and Zune, and programming and on-demand options available through cable and satellite providers. Xbox alone is growing from hundreds of thousands of pieces of content to millions. By combining all this content with the power of Bing's deep search expertise, Microsoft Tellme's voice technology and the magic of Kinect, we'll be able to provide instant access to the expansive catalogue of entertainment options on Xbox Live. You say it, Xbox finds it, and you can enjoy it faster. Voice search works across media types and across apps so you can focus on deciding what to enjoy rather than where and how to find it.

Just saying: "Xbox Bing Lego" or "Xbox Bing X-Men" will give you all the available options for the movie, music, game and other matches around those titles.

You can select, browse or refine your search using voice and hand gestures so that you find what you want in a fraction of the time it currently takes.

Because you may have several viewing options, in this case, Xbox will prioritize your choices based on what you own or the services to which you are a subscriber, such as Netflix. Bing on Xbox will help you decide by giving you other options to consider such as High Definition and purchase price.

Bing on Xbox will initially be available in English in the United States, Canada and United Kingdom, and we're committed to bring voice search to as many languages and dialects as possible in the future.

Bing on Xbox gives you ultimate control. Bing on Xbox means you spend more time enjoying your entertainment, and far less time hunting for it. Bing on Xbox combines your voice and all your entertainment to make TV more amazing -- you are the controller.

Live Video on YouTube

Well last September YouTube did a brief test of live video streaming. I guess it went well because they are rolling it out today.

It's amazing really since Recorded VOD (video on demand) is a much more difficult problem then live broadcast video.  This is the reason I focused on live video, because the bar was in some ways lower. In other ways higher because you need to maintain good signal paths across the network.  But that's what I used my ECIP protocol for.

Here are some articles on YouTube's live streaming.
YouTube is going LIVE

Coming At You: Live Video on YouTube.

YouTube is going live.
Google Inc.’s video arm is rolling out a special platform for live streaming shows. Called YouTube Live, the site lets viewers browse through live shows that are playing now, as well as ones that are coming up or already have been recorded.

Flash streaming

Joshua: Hey John!
Sent at 3:47 PM on Tuesday
me: hi
Sent at 3:54 PM on Tuesday
Joshua: you going to go revolutionize the video streaming business and get rich? :)
Sent at 4:01 PM on Tuesday
me: It's a nice thought, but since flash and youtube are now doing almost everything that I had in 1996 there is probably little chance of that.
I am working on a Head Mounted display
Something like http://www.lumusvision.com/
Joshua: nice!
me: Not sure how far it will get, still in research phase
I also had an incredible idea for super caps as in the end of battery technology as we know it
Joshua: dang!
Sent at 4:05 PM on Tuesday
Joshua: That would be amazing too. I still think you can improve on the CDN side of video streaming though.
Sent at 4:06 PM on Tuesday
me: I am sure I can by using P2P or cooperation from the prodiders I had a live p2p streaming system at one point up for demo's a long long time ago.
Sent at 4:09 PM on Tuesday
Joshua: could a site like youtube use something like that?
Sent at 4:12 PM on Tuesday
me: They are limited to what Adobe's macromedia flash platform can operate with
I was thinking of selling a flash server since adobe want's $4000 for one that only works on windows server but for recorded video a web server is fine
Joshua: what can a flash server do that a normal one can't?
me: So this would be for live flash video streaming encode and stream at the same time it's like web server, but the file never ends. so a normal web server can't do it the livecam server can already do this.
Sent at 4:17 PM on Tuesday
Joshua: whats the difference between your server and the livecam one?
me: Mine is the livecam one
I wrote it
Joshua: lol. thats really cool.
me: Sorry I thought you knew this.
Joshua: nope. it's really impressive though.
me: we made a web server version of it called afterburner, it's on sourceforge
Joshua: would it be able to save a company like google money?
Sent at 4:21 PM on Tuesday
me: Well they are already using litehttp similar to afterburner from what I can tell, haven't read the source code yet.
and no one is doing live flash streaming but 2 small web sites
Joshua: you said that most content is recorded though.
me: ustream.tv and justin.tv but any web server will work for recorded because it just serving up large files some throttling would help them not waste bandwidth by not serving more of the file then the viewer is going to need right now someone on a fast connection will download the who video as fast as they can even if they will just flip to another video and not watch , so there is a lot of data sent that it just tossed out later and never used. Increasing bandwidth costs.

Joshua: Great point. Hey John, I gotta jet. It's always good talking to you and I'll catch up with you later. Have a great one!
