Fwd: Horrible Bosses - Now Available on U-verse Movies

U-verse as a service it terrible.  It's mostly just terrible cable boxes.

1.) I have several boxes in the house but can only watch HD on only one at a time.
2.)  If I loose power or reboot the master cable box. I. loose all recorded tv shows.
3.) None of the cable boxes work nicely with the remote.
It's very very difficult to change channels.  It ignores most remote control signals even thou the green front panel led blinks acknowledging it's been received.
So getting to a channel like CNN can take me several minutes of struggling.  If it was on one box I would think it just needs new batteries.  But this is true in 5 rooms.
The software one the cable boxes is so slow that I can press channel up and 20 seconds later the channel will change.
I should post a video of this on youtube.
4.)  Sometimes the box gets locked up.  Forcing you to power cycle and loose all recording.  When the master box locks up. Tv in all rooms stops working.

XBMC

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/XBMC

XBMC Media Center (formerly Xbox Media Center) is a free and open source cross-platform digital media hub and HTPC (Home theater PC) software with a 10-foot user interface designed to be a media player for the living-room TV. Its graphical user interface (GUI) allows the user to easily manage video, photos, podcasts, and music from a computer, optical disc, local network, and the internet using a remote control. The XBMC project is managed by the non-profit technology consortium XBMC Foundation.

It is a popular alternative to Microsoft's Windows Media Center and Apple's Front Row for HTPC (Home Theater PC) use. Similar to competing software like MediaPortal andMythTV, it has a skinnable as well as user-configurable interface and plugin support. The latest stable release of XBMC also have an integrated digital distribution platform 'app store' / 'app market' called "Addons Manager" that has a growing list of community driven addon plugins for online content like YouTube, Hulu, Netflix, Grooveshark, Pandora Radio, as well andthemes (skins) and more available from a common official repository, while still enabling third-party developers to also host their own unofficial repositories for addon plugins that any user can choose to add themselves if they like.

XBMC was originally created as a media center application for the first-generation Xbox game console but is now, since 2010, officially available as a native application for Linux, Mac OS X (Snow Leopard, Leopard, Tiger, iOS (iDevices (must be jailbroken)), Apple TV), and Microsoft Windows operating systems, running on most common processor architectures. Also available is a bootable Live CD and Live USB standalone version referred to as "XBMC Live" which is made for easy setup on bare-metal installations and to be used for interactive demonstrations.

In addition, as a leader in niche market of media center software, the source code from XBMC is used as an open platform application framework and technological convergence platform for others projects to base their Smart TV entertainment system, set-top boxes, interactive television for hotels, or home media center software on for over-the-top content use and more, and today at least Boxee, MediaPortal, Plex, 9x9 Player, and Voddler are separate derivative products that are all openly known to initially have forked the GUI engine and media player core parts of their software from XBMC's source code. While still using their own brand and customized interface, a few like Boxee and 9x9 Player, are also affiliate marketing their software/devices as "Designed for XBMC" and "Powered by XBMC" with official XBMC logo by certified approval from the XBMC Foundation and the Team-XBMC developers

Dear John,
It is clear that for many of our members two websites would make things more difficult, so we are going to keep Netflix as one place to go for streaming and DVDs.
This means no change: one website, one account, one password…in other words, no Qwikster.
While the July price change was necessary, we are now done with price changes.
We're constantly improving our streaming selection. We've recently added hundreds of movies from Paramount, Sony, Universal, Fox, Warner Bros., Lionsgate, MGM and Miramax. Plus, in the last couple of weeks alone, we've added over 3,500 TV episodes from ABC, NBC, FOX, CBS, USA, E!, Nickelodeon, Disney Channel, ABC Family, Discovery Channel, TLC, SyFy, A&E, History, and PBS.
We value you as a member, and we are committed to making Netflix the best place to get your movies & TV shows.
Respectfully,
The Netflix Team

Miramax CEO Finally Admits: Control Over Distribution Channel Is A Much Bigger Issue Than 'Piracy'

Miramax CEO Finally Admits: Control Over Distribution Channel Is A Much Bigger Issue Than 'Piracy'

from the but-of-course dept

As a ton of folks have been submitting, Miramax's CEO, Mike Lang, recently admitted that control over the distribution channel is a much bigger issue than "piracy." Of course, that's what some of us have been arguing for ages. The "fight" over "piracy" has always been a fight about control of the distribution channel.

"Piracy really is not the bigger issue for our company or for our library," Lang said. "It's been a lack of exploitation, just not getting it out there."
Nice to see someone in the industry actually willing to step up and say it. He also notes that he wants his movies to be available in as many places as possible, because actual competition will be better for everyone. Interesting to see him willing to say this out loud. Wonder if he'll get a "talking to" from the MPAA folks about undermining their whole argument by admitting the truth.

When: Tuesday, October 18, 2011
6:00pm - 7:00pm: Networking and Refreshments
7:00pm - 8:30pm: Panel Discussion and Q&A

Augmented-Reality holds the promise of merging the physical world with information, but the 'killer app' remains elusive. Today, the rise of the smartphone and tablet - with powerful 3D, 4G, and high-res cameras - combined with significant advances in computer-vision, are finally unleashing the full power of AR. Technology leaders such as Intel, Qualcomm, and Nvidia, are targeting AR's disruptive potential on mobile advertising, gaming, and education, by heavily investing in next-gen AR platforms.

With a market size projected to reach $1.5 billion by 2015, leading brands, entrepreneurs and investors are developing AR applications that meld virtual experiences with everyday consumer lives. But will the mass market embrace augmented reality experiences? How will these developments change the game for retailers, advertisers, teachers, and game and mobile applications -- and which monetization models will be most successful? Click here for more details and to register. Click here to tweet this event.

A video card made entirely out of discrete components.

From Hack-A-Day A masochistic video card

Have a penchant for pain? Why not destroy your fingertips with a wire-wrap tool building a video card made entirely out of discrete components.

When [Chris] decided to build an entry for the Dangerous Prototypes 7400 logic competition he already had his hands full. The 74xx chips he had on hand had a maximum clock frequency of 25MHz, but the VGA pixel clock runs at 40MHz. dividing the H sync timing by 4 means the maximum speed required of the video card is only 10MHz, albeit with a reduced resolution.

The video card was constructed on perfboard with wirewrap sockets. An 8-bit DAC was included, allowing the card to display 256 separate colors but only the three primary lines were wired up to the VGA cable. As is, the card cycles through 8 different colors in a constant loop, not bad for a pile of chips.

VGA out has been done on everything from an ARM to an ATtiny, but rarely, if ever, has VGA been done with discrete components. While this video card may not be our first choice for bitcoin mining, it’s still a very impressive build. Check out the walk through video after the break.

Microsoft To Bring Cable TV To 360

From Slashdot:

iONiUM writes with a CNET article outlining the next step in Microsoft's plans for cable television, which he says "seems like yet another step forward in killing traditional cable companies." From the article:"[Microsoft] announced this morning that nearly 40 television content providers — including Comcast, Verizon, and HBO in the United States — will roll out programming over Xbox Live. The company also has deals lined up with providers in the U.K., Spain, Canada, Mexico, Germany, and Italy."

BitTorrent Expands Live Streaming Tests

Posted: 05 Oct 2011 01:47 AM PDT

BitTorrent has quietly been testing its upcoming live streaming platform, and now the company is ready to take the next step with a new round of scalability tests that could include the live streaming of indie concerts. A new BitTorrent Live website built with these kinds of tests in mind launched a few days ago, but a company spokesperson cautioned that "a broad beta is still a couple of months away."

BitTorrent has been testing its live streaming platform with a limited number of users at a no-frills website that hasn't been publicized but has nonetheless been publicly accessible for some time at live.bittorrent.com. At the end of last week, the site suddenly received a significant face-lift, complete with installation instructions for the BitTorrent Live software and a brief explanation that reads:

"BitTorrent Live is a whole new P2P protocol to distribute live streamed data across the internet without the need for infrastructure, and with a minimum of latency."

Users can download BitTorrent live clients for Windows, Mac OS and Linux. The client simply works in the background to facilitate data transfer and doesn't allow any configuration. Video streams display in the browser via Flash, and a Facebook plug-in allows users to chat with one another while watching a stream. An additional tab offers access to the audio and video bitrate and other debug data.

Speaking of video: BitTorrent's spokesperson told me that the tests have so far been restricted to "simple pre-recorded content loops to test latency and audio/visual sync." I was able at one time to tap into a prerecorded stream of a winter sports event but at other times simply didn't get to see anything.

However, those P2P live streaming tests could get a lot more exciting soon: "One of the ideas is to invite a few of our favorite indie artists into our office to broadcast content and help us kick the tires with their fans," said BitTorrent's spokesperson. Still, don't expect BitTorrent to stream Coachella anytime soon. I was told that "the redesign isn't intended to suggest we're out of the R&D stage of designing, building and testing the product."

BitTorrent inventor Bram Cohen has worked on the live streaming platform for close to three years, and he told me at NewTeeVee Live last year that his efforts included writing a complete new P2P protocol from scratch. The BitTorrent protocol itself, he said, simply introduced too much latency to be a viable live streaming solution.

Mozilla Develops Gladius 3D Game Engine

From SlashDot: Mozilla Develops Gladius 3D Game Engine

"Mozilla is developing its own 3D engine called Gladius as part of a wider Paladin project whose aim it is to bring 3D to the web. As all programmers know, the best way to learn is to experiment, and that's exactly what Mozilla is doing. In order to develop Gladius the team decided to create a game called RescueFox (best played in Firefox). It's a very basic prototype, and Mozilla has no interest in taking it further, but the purpose it served was to highlight what still needs to be done to make Gladius a solid web browser 3D engine solution."

Estimating Age With Kinect's 3D Camera To Filter Content - Slashdot

http://yro.slashdot.org/story/11/10/01/1421209/estimating-age-with-kinects-3d-camera-to-filter-content

"Hal in 2001: 'I'm sorry, Dave. I'm afraid I can't do that [open the pod bay doors].' Kinect in 2011: 'I'm sorry, Dave Jr. I'm afraid I can't do that [tune in to the Spice Channel].' A Microsoft patent filing made public this week proposes to restrict access to TV, movies and video games by using a 3D depth camera to estimate viewers' ages based upon the dimensions and proportions of a person's body, such as head width to shoulder width, and torso length to overall height. For adults with short arms or other seemingly childlike proportions, settings can be overridden by someone with an administrator password."
