Dish Unveils 2TB Hopper DVR, Satellite Broadband Service | News & Opinion | PCMag.com

Dish, formerly Dish Network, calls centralized video server "Hopper", and clients "Joey". You only get 3 Joeys.
http://mobile.pcmag.com/device2/article.php?CALL_URL=http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2398631,00.asp

http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2398631,00.asp

LAS VEGAS—Dish Network used the Consumer Electronics Show to rebrand itself and embrace a more connected customer base, unveiling a new "Hopper" DVR with a 2TB hard drive and a companion device dubbed Joey.
The company will also partner with ViaSat for satellite broadband service.
Going forward, the pay TV business will be known simply as Dish. CEO Joe Clayton said during a press conference here that Dish wanted a product that people would know by name, like Droid or iPhone. To that end, Dish has adopted the kangaroo as its mascot; hence the Hopper Joey monikers. Clayton actually emerged onstage carting a tiny joey.
The Hopper includes three satellite TV tuners, and a 2TB hard drive that holds up to 2,000 hours of video, up to 250 hours of HD, or up to 1,000 hours of SD user recordings. The device is Bluetooth-equipped for linking to devices like wireless headphones and includes built-in DLNA, as well as picture-in-picture for watching two channels at the same time.
The Hopper can record up to six TV shows at once—four PrimeTime Anytime shows and two live programs. PrimeTime Anytime is a new feature that will allow users, with one click, to record every single primetime show from ABC, CBS, Fox, and NBC on a given night and store them for eight days.
"This creates an on-demand library of approximately 100 hours of primetime TV shows, and makes it easy to catch up on episodes from last night and last week's airing," Dish said.
To extend TV viewing to other rooms, Dish is offering the smaller, companion device known as Joey, which runs a 750 MHz Broadcom processor. With a Hoppper and three small Joeys, customers can watch content simultaneously in four separate rooms around the house.
If you've torn apart your living room looking for the remote, the Hopper will include a convenient "locate remote" button; click it and your remote will beep.
Dish did not announce exact release dates; the Hopper is listed as "coming soon" on its Web site.
Dish is part of the TV Everywhere effort, which will allow customers to access content on the Web via www.DishOnline.com. The Hopper can also be connected to the Sling Adapter for on-the-go access.
To that end, Dish will partner with ViaSat   to offer satellite broadband service that boasts up to 12 Mbps download and 3 Mbps upload speeds. Bundles will start at $79.98 per month. Clayton pushed the service as a way to get broadband to underserved rural areas; the offering will expand this summer when Dish parent company EchoStar launches a new high-powered satellite, Clayton said.
Dish will include access to several partner services. The $10 Blockbuster at Home service, an extension of the Blockbuster Movie Pass launched in the fall, will include streaming access to more than 10,000 movies and TV shows, including 3,000 kids shows and 20 premium movie and family channels, among other things.
Customers who subscribe to HBO will also get expanded access to the channel's content online. Sirius XM will also be available, as will apps like Facebook, Twitter, Pandora, and The Weather Channel.
For those who are on the fence, Dish is providing 24-hour access to its content via TV Everywhere. Sign up at dish.com/testdrive to try it out.

Makers Keep Flogging 3D TV, Viewers Keep Shrugging - Slashdot

From Slashdot:

Makers Keep Flogging 3D TV, Viewers Keep Shrugging

Posted by timothy
from the but-it's-got-three-dee! dept.

A Wired article (as carried by CNN) attempts to answer the question of why 3D television hasn't caught on. The reasons listed there (high price, paltry content, the need for 3D glasses for typical sets, headaches and strain) all seem to be on the money, in themselves, but I think don't go far enough. 3D on a set small enough for home use outside a high-end home-theater rig seems to me like a clever novelty that I can't even enjoy unless I've given it my full attention. It's nothing like the jump from black-and-white to color, or even the jump from my old (circa 1993) 19" Trinitron to a flat-panel display. On the big screen, it's another story — there, 3D can be arresting and involving, even when it's exaggerated (and it is). On home sets, even quite large ones, to my eye 3D usually looks phony and out of place. Never mind that the content is limited and often expensive, or that there are competing standards for expensive glasses to wear — I just don't like that the commitment is greater than that required for casual, conventional TV; I can't readily scan email, skim through a magazine, or keep watching out the corner of my eye from another room. (I'm hoping to find some actually watchable no-glasses 3D sets at CES next week, but I'm skeptical.)

Kodak in danger of shares being delisted from NYSE

Bye Bye Kodak. What once was the invincible Juggernaut is slowing sinking beneath and ocean of cheap bandwidth and the onslaught of Moore's law as cameras become ubiquitous and not even a commodity but just another feature to other devices.
January 3, 2012

Eastman Kodak Co. has been warned by the New York Stock Exchange that its stock will be delisted if the price remains below $1 per share for the next six months, the ailing photography company said Tuesday.

The exchange put the company on notice after its shares' average closing price was below $1 for 30 consecutive trading days.

Vuzix Announces Plans for SMART Glasses Technology

Vuzix Announces Plans for SMART Glasses Technology - Holy Grail of Wearable Display Industry, See-Through HD Glasses in a Designer Sunglasses Form Factor - at CES 2012
See New Vuzix SMART Glasses Technology in action at CES – Central Hall Booth #13646

LAS Vegas – January 6, 2012 – Vuzix Corporation (TSX-V: VZX, OTC:BB: VUZI, FMB: V7X), award-winning manufacturer of video eyewear, is excited to unveil SMART Glasses Technology - Integrated HD display engines and waveguide optics that literally break the boundaries of conventional optics and display solutions. For decades wearable displays have been referred to as Head Mounted Displays because of their bulky size and odd appearance; primarily attributable to the displays and conventional refractive and or reflective optics that they employ.  This older technology is limited by the laws of optical physics that result in form factors that are large, heavy, and practically impossible to make into fashion eyewear.

Now after years of internal developments and our recent licensing relationship with Nokia Corporation, SMART Glasses Technology is finally here. This amazing new technology starts with a compact display engine capable of hi contrast and brightness for outdoor use.  The output is then relayed into a 1.4 mm thick polymer waveguide lens with input and output hologram structures on the surface which squeezes the light down the waveguide and then two dimensionally expands the image back into the user's eye, creating an image that is then mixed into the real world.  And, all this technology neatly fits into the temples & lenses of a conventional pair of eyewear!

As the name implies, SMART Glasses are much more than just a wearable TV. Designed to work with SMART Devices that are typically connected to the internet, SMART Glasses are interactive and merge virtual information with the real world.  They can be used at night or outdoors in full daylight.

Vuzix is planning a line of both monocular and binocular SMART Glasses for the Commercial, Industrial and Consumer markets. With integrated head tracking and options for multiple camera technologies Vuzix SMART Glasses can broaden the users' sensory perception across a greatly expanded light spectrum; additionally they can be used to recognize their environment along with their position in the real world, all-the-while recording and transmitting what the user sees.

From standalone solutions for night vision and first responder use to fully internet connected and geospatially aware devices for amazing Augmented Reality applications.

Look for Vuzix SMART Glasses technology initial release into the commercial and industrial markets by fall 2012.

Follow Vuzix on Twitter @Vuzix and facebook.com/Vuzix for the latest news on the SMART Glasses Technology and the company's entire line award winning video eyewear.

For Louis CK, the Future of Content is No Laughing Matter

From http://bigthink.com/ideas/41602

Judging by the tremendous outpouring of support he’s received across the Web over the past week, comedian Louis C.K. may be the future of how stars create, produce and distribute their content on the Internet. In mid-December, Louis C.K. bypassed the cable TV networks and made his one-hour live performance at the Beacon Theater available on his personal website at a flat rate of five bucks per video download. Thus far, the experiment in content distribution has been a wild success, netting Louis C.K. close to $750,000 after more than 200,000 downloads. Yes, people actually paid for content in 2011, even when they had opportunity to get it for free.
What made the experiment so audacious was not the pricing (nearly free), or the lack of digital rights management on the video content, or the payment mechanism (PayPal), it was the fact that Louis C.K. went out and managed everything – from the production of the live comedy show to the editing of the footage to the setting up of the website for downloads on his own dime, using readily-available, off-the-shelf tools. Even when people had the chance to access pirated versions of the show for free, Louis C.K. still got more than 200,000 downloads. After backing out $250,000 in production costs, the show still netted him a cool $750,00. Not bad for a few hours’ worth of work.
At a time when the marginal cost of original content has been driven down to nearly zero, Louis C.K.’s experiment is a reminder: Steward Brand’s oft-repeated maxim from 1984 that “information wants to be free” was followed by another, lesser-known maxim, “And it also wants to be expensive.”
And it’s not just Louis C.K. who’s found a way to monetize original content using personal, DIY distribution tools on the Web. The Wall Street Journal recently profiled Darcie Chan, a 37-year-old environmental lawyer with kids who found time to write after putting the kids to bed, and ended up writing a bestseller that's sold 400,000+ copies, all without a publisher. Instead, she published the novel herself, took out ads to support the book herself, and priced the book at $0.99 to encourage broad-based sampling. All told, the Wall Street Journal estimates that she's cleared $130,000 on the book. Darcie Chan’s model was similar to Louis C.K.’s – the do-it-yourself model fueled by a little elbow grease and a basic understanding of how to reach lots of people very quickly on the Internet. Or, consider Mark Cuban, who just wrote a 30,000-word e-book on business and is now looking to sell it to his millions of friends and followers on the Internet, all at a low-low price of $2.99.
Which is not to say that the world of content creation has been forever turned on its head and that content creators will now be churning out huge, seven-figure paychecks (ok, ok, maybe just six-figure paychecks) from now on. Louis C.K. and Mark Cuban are outliers in the content creation business, to say the least. They come with a huge installed base and plenty of name recognition.
To think that everyone can emulate the success of a Louis C.K. or Mark Cuban is a bit like thinking that Radiohead offering its latest album at a “pay-what-you-want” price without a major label would upend the music industry back in 2007. (The last time I checked, most songs on iTunes are still selling for $0.99 or $1.29, not a “pay-what-you-want” price.) However, the future for original content creators on the Internet is looking much brighter than at any time in the past 12 months. If you create any type of content on the Interwebs, you have to be asking yourself right now: What’s my Louis C.K. strategy for 2012?

bs0d3 writes"Kopimism is now an official religion in Sweden. Kopimi beliefs originated with the Swedish group called Piratbyran who believed that everything should be shared freely online without restrictions from copyright. Leader Isak Gerson, has recently had some disagreements with the Swedish Pirate Party where many people disagree with all religions."Here's the official website for the "Missionary Church of Kopimism."

Avoiding Facial Recognition of the Future

Avoiding Facial Recognition of the Future

from the like-in-paul-theroux's-o-zone dept.

hypnosec writes"A New York-based designer has created a camouflage technique that makes it much harder for computer based facial recognition. Along with the growth of closed circuit television (CCTV) , this has become quite a concern for many around the world, especially in the UK where being on camera is simply a part of city life. Being recognized automatically by computer is something that hearkens back to 1984 or A Scanner Darkly. As we move further into the 21st century, this futuristic techno-horror fiction is seeming more and more accurate. Never fear though people, CV Dazzle has some styling and makeup ideas that will make you invisible to facial recognition cameras. Why the 'fabulous' name? It comes from World War I warship paint that used stark geometric patterning to help break up the obvious outline of the vessel. Apparently it all began as a thesis at the Interactive Telecommunications Program at New York University. It addressed the problems with traditional techniques of hiding the face, like masks and sunglasses and looked into more socially and legally acceptable ways of styling that could prevent a computer from recognizing your face. Fans of Assassin's Creed might feel a bit at home with this, as it's all about hiding in plain sight."

Mobile high-definition links (MHL)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mobile_High-definition_Link

Mobile High-Definition Link (MHL) is a proposed industry standard for a mobile audio/video interface for directly connecting mobile phones and other portable consumer electronics (CE) devices to high-definition televisions (HDTVs) and displays. The MHL standard features a single cable with a low pin-count interface able to support up to 1080p high-definition (HD) video and digital audio while simultaneously charging the connected device.

MHL is connection agnostic (i.e., not tied to a specific type of hardware connector). The first implementations dual-purpose the most popular mobile connection (micro USB) and the most popular HDTV connection (HDMI). Other than the connectors being used, no USB nor HDMI technology is being used. It is exclusively MHL signalling through the connectors and over the cable. Other proprietary and custom connections are also allowed.

Almost immediately after the specification was announced, articles appeared highlighting the use of the industry-standard micro-USB connector to send high-definition video and audio, as well as take in power, and use a command bus between the mobile device and the TV.

MHL is based on Silicon Image's technology released in 2008

Medical Imaging With a Hacked LCD Projector

An anonymous reader writes"Grad students at UC Irvine have built a spatial frequency domain imaging system using parts from a cheap LCD projector and a digital camera. The system can be used to check the level of bruising or oxygenation in layers of tissue that aren't visible to the naked eye, according to an article in Chemical and Engineering News. An accompanying video shows the series of patterned pulses that the improvised imaging system makes in order to read hemoglobin and fat levels below the surface of the skin. A more sophisticated version of the imaging system is being commercialized by a startup within UC Irvine, called Modulated Imaging. The article and video also describe infrared brain scanners that can non-invasively check for brain bleeds, and multiphoton microscopes that produce stunning images of live skin cells."
