JPEG 2000 has caught the attention of the professional media world for good reason. First, it closely matches some workflows, where the production process operates on each frame of a video stream as a discrete unit. This is different from MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 AVC Long-GOP flavors, where, during the reconstruction process, algorithms reference frames before and after the frame being reconstructed.

The ability to compress each frame as a free-standing unit has made it popular in the digital intermediate space in Hollywood. JPEG 2000 is also of interest to those who want lossless compression. It can provide a bit-perfect reconstruction of the original compressed image, although at a cost in terms of bandwidth. Also, the wavelet compression used in JPEG 2000 provides some unique opportunities that are not available in other compression methods.

The wavelet transform separates the image into four sub-bands. The first sub-band is a lowpass horizontal and lowpass vertical (LL). Images that have gone through this separation are basically lower-resolution images of the original. The other sub-bands are as follows: lowpass horizontal and highpass vertical (LH); highpass horizontal and lowpass vertical (HL); and highpass horizontal and highpass vertical (HH).

Using wavelet transforms and some clever thinking, implementers can do some interesting things. For example, they can send only the LL image, if they know that they are feeding a low-resolution display. Or they can send the LL sub-band in a highly-protected stream, in order to ensure the original image arrives intact. That said, they can then send the higher-resolution sub-bands unprotected since a momentary loss of these sub-bands is not likely to be noticed.

Given JPEG 2000's popularity, it is not surprising there have been some developments that make it particularly interesting for professional applications. First, the ITU has created an amendment (1) that outlines specific configurations for broadcast contribution applications. These configurations are intended to establish interoperability points for those implementing JPEG 2000 in professional applications. This is important because, until the amendment was released, there were so many variables in the compression tool set that interoperability was unlikely. The second important development, Amendment 5 to the MPEG 2 standard (2), provides a mapping of the JPEG 2000 Program Elementary Stream (PES) onto the MPEG-2 Transport Stream (TS).

Finally, some time ago, the Pro-MPEG Forum started to develop a standardized way to transport MPEG-2 TS over IP networks. The Video Services Forum picked up on this work and continued to develop it, finally submitting a draft for standardization within the SMPTE. This standard, SMPTE 2022-2 (3), describes a method for mapping MPEG-2 Transport Streams onto IP networks using RTP and UDP. The document was approved in 2007 and is the most common standard deployed today for professional video transport applications.

So these three developments — development of broadcast profiles; a mapping of JPEG 2000 Program Elementary Streams to MPEG 2 Transport Streams; and wide availability of MPEG-2 TS over IP transport equipment — mean now it is possible to transport JPEG 2000 over IP networks.


JPEG 2000 over IP relies on three critical developments:
broadcast contribution profiles, JPEG 2000 PES to MPEG-2 mapping,
and SMPTE 2022-2 for MPEG-2 transport over IP networks.


Starting with a video source, the image is compressed using a compression engine. This engine is configured to one of the Broadcast Contribution profiles in ITU-T Amendment 3. The compression engine produces a JPEG 2000 PES. This stream is then fed to an MPEG-2 encapsulator. The encapsulator uses the mapping rules established in the MPEG-2 specification, Amendment 5, to map the PES onto an MPEG-2 TS. This MPEG-2 TS is fully compliant with MPEG-2 specifications because, from the outside, it looks just like a normal MPEG-2 Transport Stream. As such, the output of the MPEG-2 encapsulator can be fed into a SMPTE 2022-2 compliant video transport device. This device encapsulates the MPEG-2 TS in standard RTP and UDP packets, and then those packets are wrapped in IP packets. These IP packets can now be fed into an IP network.

You might wonder why we take a relatively new compression algorithm such as JPEG 2000 and encapsulate it in MPEG-2. There are several reasons for this. First and foremost, there are already a number of specifications for how to encapsulate a number of different audio formats into MPEG-2 Transport Streams. Remember: JPEG 2000 says nothing about audio. Using MPEG-2 TS allows us to transport and present the audio alongside the JPEG 2000 compressed video using well-known audio standards. Also, this approach allows us to leverage the existing SMPTE 2022-2 MPEG-2 TS over IP standard. Finally, there are no technical issues in MPEG-2 TS that need to be fixed in this application space, so re-use of Transport Streams rather than inventing something entirely new seems like a good solution.

So, the good news is that the time is ripe for development of an interoperable, open solution for the transport of JPEG 2000 video and audio over IP networks. The standards exist, and there is a clear path forward. But, there are a few issues that need addressed.

JPEG 2000 has been around for quite some time. As such, some proprietary JPEG 2000 over IP transport solutions have already been created. Of course, these were developed in response to customer demand, so existing implementations may need to be changed. Another issue is that while the broadcast contribution profiles in Amendment 3 go a long way toward interoperability in the JPEG 2000 PES space, recent analysis suggests, without further definition, implementations based upon these profiles will not be interoperable. Finally, until the industry actually tries to connect devices from different manufacturers together, interoperability cannot be assured.

Fortunately, the industry is becoming aware of these issues, and steps are being taken to begin work in earnest on interoperable, open transport of professional JPEG 2000 images over IP networks. I would expect to see some developments around this in the first half of the coming year.

Meet the contenders The company favored to win the race for airwaves appears to be Verizon (NYS: VZ) ,who has taken on an "especially aggressive strategy" for taking over the spectrum. If approved by the FCC,two deals can bring in over 275 million new wireless customers and revenue streams.

Verizon hopes to buy radio spectrum from CoxCommunications,a $315 million investment that could return 28 million potential customers throughout Boston,New Orleans,Jacksonville (FL),Phoenix,San Diego,and Las Vegas.

If the FCC approves the deal,it will help put Verizon well ahead of its competitors Sprint Nextel (NYS: S) and AT&T (NYS: T) . Because the scarce spectrum space cannot be duplicated,Verizon could theoretically out-serve competitors in some regions.

Verizon is also spending $3.6 billion (pending FCC approval) to obtain airwaves from SpectrumCo,which houses major cable companies including Comcast, Time Warner and Bright House Networks.

Verizon's acquisition of the airwaves will be especially impacting to the industry now that AT&T has canceled its massive T-Mobile takeover. Had the deal gone through,AT&T would have overtaken Verizon as the industry leader.

The Memory Glasses: Google's AR-Amped Specs Reveal A Brave, Branded New World

Katy Perry looks cute in the video for Last Friday Night, no? Glad you agree--glasses, despite their bum rap, can be sexy. But even Katy's orbular charms can't stop 'em going by the wayside as fashion, contact lens science, and laser surgery all evolve. Yet Google may have a way to get us all wearing glasses in the near future: Not to help us see better, necessarily, but to see "extra." The tech behemoth is now throwing considerable, hefty resources behind creating augmented-reality glasses--and they may be ready rather soon.
The New York Times spurred lots of debate this week with inside information from both Google and Apple, indicating that the firms were working on wearable technology. The story got more interesting when 9to5Google learned from sources that Google is building technology that's not the wristwatch-style device people had imagined, but rather goggles. Further information suggests that Google's in late prototype stages and the device resembles traditional eyeglasses just with slightly thicker rims, and with limited button controls on the arms. It's likely running an Android OS inside, and logic would suggest it has a wireless connection to a device like an Android phone--possibly something like Bluetooth 4.0.Google's Sergey Brin is closely involved with the project, which will be Google-branded, and it's also noted that back in June Dr. Richard DuVaul, an expert in wearable heads-up displays, moved from Apple to Google. (DuVaul's dissertation was about something he called "The Memory Glasses," which are apparently very much like what Google now has in mind.)
So what we're looking at is a genuine piece of Google high-tech goggle trickery that may be getting close to real production levels. It's probably based on existing technology, but knowing how much money Google has available to spend on R&D, as well as its powerful connections and Google's habit of pushing novel tech into its flagship Android phones--like NFC--it's likely that Google may have achieved some very clever things with the display technology in the goggles. 
And what they'll be used for is pretty evident: Augmented Reality. This is a technology that's been bubbling along for ages, and has exploded thanks to the current smartphone revolution. It's being championed by bespoke uses inside some apps--where holding your phone up to view the world around you adds in extra information to the scene as seen on the screen, with historical data or imagery--as well as by novel "reality browser" systems like Layar and Metaio, which give third-party developers the opportunity to write apps within the browser for a host of uses, from gaming to fact discovery to education to navigation. The technology has virtually limitless uses, the most interesting of which probably won't be dreamed up until it's ubiquitous. For a sci-fi sample, check out the multispectral, data-rich view of the world James Cameron imagined the Terminator would have--its eye-replacing cameras "see" the world more richly than we do:
That's where Google's technology stable comes in incredibly handy. Existing AR applications need specially populated databases, or access to them, in order to deliver additional location-aware information to the smartphone user. Google, on the other hand, has untold terabytes of information about practically everything on Earth already indexed by its search engines--as well as highly specific location-tagged imagery and wireless data acquired as part of its Street View service. It's also been buying other companies recently at the rate of roughly one per month, and this has recently included gems like Zagat--essentially a rich a source of location-tagged, curated reviews of services. Imagine you're wearing Google's goggles and they pop up a review of the restaurant you're looking at in the field of view--that would definitely change how you visit a new city.
Mapping and navigation while a tourist would change too--all Google has to do is project a red line on your field of view that tells you which road to walk down. The application of Google augmented goggles even extends to shopping--presumably the high-tech eyewear would know where you are when you're using them, and could tell you've stepped into Macy's, for example. Imagine that Google has an offer-based deal with Macy's that day for a particular clothing item, and the goggles would instantly alert you and probably even help you walk to where the display stand is. Google also knows a wealth of data about you, and we seem happy to surrender more: So we can forsee AR goggle applications like a virtual running coach, where your last timed-and-GPS'd run is represented as a virtual character jogging alongside--or ahead of--you. 
Perhaps the most worrying, but powerful, part of this kind of tech is the ability it would give to Google to get advertising plastered over the whole world--essentially inserting an ad display layer between your eyes and the world. Who would need postered ad hoardings when everyone's Google goggles would be showing them highly tailored AR ads superimposed on a blank whiteboard at an ad location...or on a cup of coffee, or on someone's T-shirt (students renting out space on it for a small fee?). And since the ads wouldn't have to be traditional static imagery, there's all sorts of crazy possibilities for 3-D augmented reality object ads: Characters from the next war movie strolling down the street next to you, passersby wearing dramatic spiky red AR hairdos graphically hijacked over their own to promote a local avant-garde hair salon. The kind of ad revenues one could command from ads that're so intertwined with your daily life probably haven't been calculated...except at Google.
There're a couple of things to think about here. AR technology may seem like a gimmick or a flash in the pan to you, but that's because of existing technical and fiscal limitations. Holding your phone up at arm's length for any period of time is a pain, and a mugging invitation in some places, and it means your experience of AR has never been "immersive" for longer than a handful of seconds. That's limited how innovative people can get with current AR applications. Head-mounted displays, goggles, are a solution to this but the current players in the game don't have the big name social influence nor the raw cash to develop tech that's both clever, good-looking and that the average Joe--by the million--would be persuaded to wear.
Google can do this. With its Android tech and its ecosystem, it's also got access to data that other AR firms can't compete with and it has the globe-spanning clout to actually change habits. And don't worry that AR goggles would suffer the same user resistance as 3-D TV goggles--the experience delivered by AR is way more sci-fi than the slightly unsatisfying home 3-D experience: The information we've covered here simply assumes the goggles would overlay extra info, but what if they also let you see in the dark via IR, or spot the UV colors in flowers? Would you be more interested then? We're not imagining a near future where we all stroll around 24/7 with digital display goggles strapped to our faces--a fashion as ubiquitous as hats were in the early part of the 20th century. But if any firm has the power to make it a habit to slip on a pair to aid with work, navigation or shopping, it's Google.

Apple may be secretly developing wearable iPods that offer full support for voice commands using the company’s Siri software. Details surrounding the supposed project were revealed by The New York Times on Monday.
Apple is reportedly working on a “curved-glass iPod that would wrap around the wrist,” which sounds similar to a watch-like device that could replace the iPod nano and shuffle in gyms around the world. Presuming Siri support would be the same as it is on the iPhone 4S, users could command the device to play a specific song, check the weather or more.
We’re even imagining deeper Siri integration where a user might be able to ask their iPod how far they have run or what their current heart rate is. Read on for more.
The New York Times also suggested that Apple’s small group of engineers working on the project have considered using the iPhone as the central information hub. So, for example, your iPhone might do all of the hard processing work while the wearable iPod is simply a means to display what you need.
Google may be working on a similar project in its Google X labs, although less information is known about it. Google is said to have already hired engineers from Apple, Nokia Labs and universities to begin development on wearable products.


Video big bang era

The bad news is that it would take you 1,700 years to watch just the videos on YouTube right now, and there's no way to watch everything. Plus there are fewer filters than ever to misinformation or disinformation, from government, corporations, and supposed experts.

NL: Video, (even though this fact has been obscured by commercial television, See: Motive, Profit), is easily, and by far, the most significant communication tool ever devised by man.

Imagine the effort and time it would have taken 100 years ago to relay the bulk of the data in the Library of Congress to Asia from DC, but now today not only can I do that with 8 keystrokes on a keyboard by typing in loc.gov but I can also give and receive language lessons in real time over Skype to anyone in Beijing.

Or learn on any other subject under the sun.

Bigcheese, in addition to Sony and Microsoft, both Apple Quicktime and Google's YouTube have got the 'audio correct' tech to where they have made great leaps and strides in minimizing and abating that 'chipmunk pitch effect' but they haven't as of yet rolled it out across the board.

In this clip if you click on 'Normal' on the bottom bar you have a range of options available where you can slow it down to as slow as ¼ speed, (not recommended if you want to watch this for almost 2.5 hours, and the audio is cut, though the audio is available at half speed), or accelerate it to 2x speed and not get driven up a tree by the chipmunks.

With certain videos in Apple Quicktime X I've seen this tech work at 8x speed.

I really, really want TED to implement this technology, the sooner the better. I'm curious as to why it's not there already in the first place, since a significant percentage of the visitors to TED are Type A Personality types that put a premium on their time.

Alex Lightman Sure, John. Looking forward to what you do with it. You've been working on this for years. In general, TiVo created an expectation to apply the TiVo functionality to all video.
