Motorola Mobility president Dan Moloney resigns; former Charter CTO Fawaz to run home business Motorola Mobility president Dan Moloney and CTO Geoff Roman are resigning, and will be replaced by former Charter Communications (Nasdaq: CHTR) executives Marwan Fawaz and Matt Bell, a source told FierceCable Thursday afternoon. | Moloney | Moloney, a 30-year veteran of Motorola and predecessor General Instrument, will stay at the company through mid-July. Fawaz, who had been CTO at Charter and Adlephia Communications, started his new job as EVP of Motorola's home business Thursday, the source said. Bell, who was VP of IP network and development at Charter, had been working with Fawaz at a Denver-based cable technology consulting firm Serepta Advisors. The cable executives had just announced the formation of Serepta in May at The Cable Show convention in Boston. Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) closed its acquisition of $12.5 billion acquisition of Motorola Mobility in May. Motorola Mobility said that Moloney was leaving the company to pursue other opportunities. "Dan has led the company through one of the most exciting periods in its 84-year history--and in the last two years, revived Motorola's innovation and drove the company's evolution into a software and network technology leader in the home ecosystem," Motorola said in a statement. "We thank Dan for all of his contributions to Motorola and to the industry at large." Dish to replace AMC, IFC and WE with free movies, HDNet and Style Dish Network (Nasdaq: DISH) said Friday morning that it'll replace AMC, IFC and WE with programming from Mark Cuban's HDNet and Comcast's (Nasdaq: CMCSA) Style Network. The move is a result of a carriage dispute with AMC Networks, which Dish says is demanding an exorbitant increase in its license fee to carry the three cable networks. Dish's contract with AMC is scheduled to expire Saturday at 11:59 p.m. ET. Dish will replace AMC, the network formerly known as American Movie Classics, with commercial free movies from HDNet Movies. The satellite TV provider said it'll replace women's network WE with Style, the fashion network launched by E! Entertainment in 2004. And it'll replace IFC, also known as Independent Film Channel, with HDNet. "A significant portion of any pay-TV bill goes to fees for content providers like AMC Networks," Dish SVP of programming Dave Shull said in a statement. "AMC Networks requires us to carry low-rated channels like IFC and WE to access a few popular AMC shows. The math is simple: it's not a good value for our customers," he added. Losing Dish's 14 million subscribers is a significant blow to AMC, and it will likely reduce its ad revenue. AMC may also lose distribution in AT&T (NYSE: T) U-verse TV homes. The telco's carriage deal with AMC is also scheduled to expire Saturday night. The replacement programming Dish announced may not be permanent, and could be hardball negotiation tactic. If enough Dish subscribers complain, the company will likely eventually renew its carriage deal with AMC. AMC officials didn't immediately respond to a request for comment Friday morning. Comcast trademarks 'The Future of Awesome' slogan Comcast (Nasdaq: CMCSA) trademarked a new slogan, "The Future of Awesome," that it may be able use to market advanced products such as its Xfinity X1 digital video service. According to a trademark application obtained by FierceCable, Comcast wants to be able to use "The Future of Awesome" to market every product that it offers, including cable TV, video-on-demand, high-speed Internet, telephone, and home security and automation services. The MSO filed the application at the U.S. Patent & Trademark office on June 21. Comcast has increased its marketing budget to advertise its Xfinity products. The company spent $1.3 billion on advertising during the first quarter, according to Kantar Media. It's not clear how soon Comcast may begin using "The Future of Awesome" slogan in marketing materials. Comcast officials didn't immediately repond to a request for comment on Friday. Boxee uses FCC to get Comcast's attention There's probably no simpler way to say this than the squeaky wheel gets the grease--especially in Washington, D.C.--where online video provider Boxee has managed to bring attention and possible resolution to cable's basic tier encryption policies and, perhaps, resurrect the AllVid initiative, research firm IMS Research said. Boxee's contention, placed before the Federal Communications Commission, was that cable and specifically Comcast (Nasdaq: CMCSA) was not allowed to encrypt its basic tier of cable programming because it interfered with over-the-top video providers like Boxee. After some wrangling and some play by the FCC, the two have apparently reached an agreement that calls for the creation--or resurrection--of an Ethernet-Digital Transport Adapter (E-DTA) can be used to deliver cable signals using DLNA protocol and breathes new life into the gasping AllVid initiative. It is "an entirely new class of TV gateway server and set-top box … clearly related to the now-dormant proposal for AllVid, which also relied on a box to translate from the cable TV signal to DLNA," IMS Research senior analyst Stephen Froehlich said in a news release. "The E-DTA would be the simplest conceivable form of TV gateway server." It would also, apparently, clear up the problem of opening basic cable tiers to OTT providers like Boxee. "The essence of the solution is that cable companies will be able to move forward with encryption and that consumers will be able to continue to rely on devices such as the Boxee Box to access basic cable," Boxee press relations manager Liz Dellheim told IMS. "We have no information regarding timing. We presented the proposed solution to the FCC and will have to wait and see how the FCC takes it from here." For its part, Comcast conceded in an ex parte filing with the federal agency that the negotiated solutions with Boxee "involves the development as soon as possible of a high definition digital transport adapter with an Ethernet connector (that) would enable a customer with a third party device to access basic tier channels directly through an Ethernet input on such third-party device or via the home network, and to change channels remotely in the E-DTA via a DLNA protocol." Long-term, Comcast's filing said, "involves creation of a licensing path for integrating DTA technology into third party devices (that) could access encrypted basic tier channels without the need for a cable operator-supplied DTA or set-top box." Bronx Cablevision technicians reject proposal to join CWA Five months after Cablevision (NYSE: CVC) employees in Brooklyn, N.Y., voted to join the Communication Workers of America, field technicians in the Bronx rejected a proposal to join the union. Thursday's vote, in which 74 percent of Cablevision technicians in the Bronx rejected the proposal to unionize, is a victory for CEO Jim Dolan, who had been encouraging employees to "give management a chance" to show them that it cares about their interests before signing a union card. "Cablevision employees have spoken loudly and clearly that they value their direct relationship with the company, especially in this period of change, growth and dynamic opportunity. Our Bronx employees gave this matter careful consideration and independently and overwhelmingly rejected the CWA's campaign of misinformation and false promises," Cablevision said in a statement. The vote miffed officials at CWA, who accused Dolan of pressuring employees to reject the union proposal through "high-pressure meetings and underhanded tactics." In a statement, the union said Dolan played the role of "intimidator-in-chief." FCC to track how disasters impact VoIP and broadband Internet services The FCC said Friday that its Disaster Information Reporting System (DIRS) can now accept information about outages at VoIP and broadband Internet services that are caused by hurricanes and other disasters. DIRS is a voluntary, Web-based program that is administered by the Public Safety and Homeland Security Bureau. "The expansion of DIRS to interconnected VoIP and broadband Internet services recognizes that consumers, businesses, and government agencies increasingly rely on broadband and interconnected VoIP services for everyday and emergency communications needs, including 9-1-1 services," the FCC said in a public notice.
